Insider Heist Foiled By Security Cameras

There are no security measures that are more effective at helping to prevent theft then a high quality surveillance camera system. A good camera system is particularly useful when the thief in question is someone that we know and trust.
This is the story of one group of residence who were able to catch someone who was abusing their confidence and put a stop to the loss of their valuables.
The setting for this story is an apartment building in New York city and it took place a few years ago.
Many of the residents chose to live in this building because of the high level of security that it has.

This feeling of safety was well deserved as the east side co-op employed around the clock door men at all the entrances and a security card was needed to gain access to the different floors.

One of these door men was a favourite of all the inhabitants, over time he had earned their confidence to the point where many had even trusted him with the keys to their apartments.
When an entire safe went missing, the owner immediately realized that they had been burglarized and contacted the police.
The safe contained over a hundred thousand dollars worth of valuables in cash and several pieces of custom made jewelry.

The owner and his neighbors were shocked by this type of crime, the majority of them hadn't experienced anything like this at this location.

It was two days after the theft was reported when the police found some of the jewelry that sold to a local pawn shop.

While the police began to search for the party that had pawned the goods, many of the residents were on alert and a few installed security cameras in their apartments.

A couple weeks later, with the investigation still on going the thief struck again, but this time his actions were recorded by surveillance cameras.
It turns out that the inhabitant's favourite door man was behind these crimes. Video was presented to the police of him rummaging through possessions, trying to dismantle one camera while in full view of another and even showed him pocketing some freshly stolen items.
With this new information provided by the cameras, the detectives were able to find out that he was actually an ex-con who some how managed to slip past the buildings screening process for new applicants and he had burglarized several apartments over the previous six months, in all he'd made off with over a quarter million dollars worth of in goods and cash. He's managed to avoid suspicion because he was so well liked and by taking only select items, so that the victims didn't even realize that they been the target of the thefts.
A search warrant allowed the police to recover other items from both his car and home, that had been stolen from the building's residents.

He was so well liked in the building that no one considered that he might be these crimes, some inhabitants even liked him so much that they were willing to give him a second chance eve after all the facts were brought to light.

With out the security camera footage to give the detectives the big break in this case this man might never have been caught.
