As your children get older, particularly school-age children, there will be a number of accomplishments you will want for them, whether it be earning good grades to getting into a dream college to the ultimate goal of establishing a successful career and becoming productive citizens.
This path, however, doesn't just appear overnight. Rather, successful people cultivate successful habits throughout their lives, and it begins early on.
If you're reading this, you've already made a step toward helping your child acquire these habits.
Effective goal-planning is immeasurably important for children.
We're not talking about the kind of goal-planning where you and your child are merely brainstorming a "dream list.
" We're talking about concrete goals with specific steps articulated to reach success.
It starts small: participating on a team, getting good grades, finishing an assignment.
Your job is to empower your child with a skill-set that they can use to be successful throughout their life.
Effective goal-planning entails specifying a goal.
This is usually the "easy" part, because most of us, kids included, have something we want in life.
Once the goal is specified, it is important to have a conversation about the steps that need to be taken to accomplish the goal.
The task should be broken down into attainable steps, which I recommend writing down (and including your child in this process). Then, it's important to post the steps somewhere visible in your home.
Constantly refer to the list and go over what has been completed, and what still needs work.
There are a variety of ways to deal with each successful step that is made toward progress.
For example, some people have their children keep a journal to keep track of progress.
Other people will have rewards for certain points of the journey (I only recommend doing this in the beginning).
Once a goal has been attained, you should celebrate in some way and reinforce for your child why all the hard work paid off.
Then, you can start focusing on more long-range goals.
