Pros and Cons of Getting a Distance Learning Degree
In this competitive working environment, getting a distance learning degree may be the additional edge you need in your resume to get you that interview you need. Many people in mid career find that this is an affordable way to learn a new skill, improve their credentials, or simply to increase their future earning potential. The good news is that with some research and advice from friends, you can find the right kind of program that fits your professional ambition and your budget.
There are many areas of interest available when it comes to pursuing a distance learning degree. Business administration may be the most popular, but specialized degrees like accounting, computer science, computer programming, environmental technology, food technology, and languages are quickly gaining ground.
The major advantages for pursuing this mode of education is the flexibility in timing. Because courses are conducted online, students can submit assignments, make queries, take tests and attend virtual lectures literally anytime and anywhere. This arrangement makes it ideal for those who need to keep a full time job or are committed to taking care of a family. These people can therefore plan their school work around their life and commit to classes or finalize assignments at night or on weekends.
Many companies today acknowledge the advantages of this education setup because their employees will be valuable assets to the company with their newfound skills. In many cases, a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) can accelerate a current position to a management level position which usually increases the earning potential exponentially. In fact, some companies are so impressed with employees who have undertaken this degree mode and made significant contributions thereafter that the companies are willing to sponsor the cost of the degree.
The downside of a distance learning degree is that there is little or no interaction among fellow students. This limits the potential of the students to make new friends or to create business contacts. Interaction among students and faculty is also highly limited, and this can be frustrating for students who thrive on active dialogues and discussions. Another downside is the fact that there are a limited number of scholarships or grants (if at all) available for distance learning degrees. This can be difficult for people who are not financially equipped.
Having said all that, learning a new skill is always a good idea. If you are financially capable to do so, getting a distance learning degree is truly an investment that everyone should think about making.
